Dr Emily-Jayne Stiles is a lecturer in Modern European History. Her teaching focuses on aspects of Holocaust history and memory, including the war crimes trials following the end of the Second World War as well as the broader development of skills for the academic discipline of History. Looking beyond the history of Nazism and the Holocaust, Emily also considers public understanding and confrontations with difficult and contentious pasts.
Emily has organised and participated in a number of student field trips to sites of historial significance such as the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum (as well as lesser-known sites throughout Europe). She is a member of the British Association for Holocaust Studies and has recently completed a research project for the forthcoming United Kingdom Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre, which proposed a narrative approach for the permanent learning space. Research currently being undertaken by Dr Stiles bridges Holocaust and Refugee Studies to focus on representations of refugees, past and present, within a museum context. It looks to raise provocative questions over the purpose and intention of Holocaust memory in the public sphere.
A number of varying teaching practices are emplolyed by Emily to engage students and aid effective learning. With a rich collection of audio and visual material available, along with a plethora of written documents, Emily utilises the archive fully to encourage critical examination of source material in many media forms. Students can be expected to participate in lively discussions about the past, while questioning how we relate this to the present. Emily considers teaching to be a two-way process and actively encourages students to challenge her perceptions and perspectives.
