Michael Talbot is Senior Lecturer in the History of the Ottoman Empire and Modern Middle East at the University of Greenwich. He teaches two ICE courses; one on the Ottoman history from the 15th to 20th centuries and another on the making of the modern Middle East in the 20th century.
He researches a range of topics in Ottoman history with a particular focus on Ottoman relations with the wider world through diplomacy, trade, maritime space and imperial rhetoric.
He teaches with a range of written, visual and audiovisual primary sources from history and the present and likes to bring in items from his collection of Ottoman and Middle Eastern coins, books and ephemera. Although he enjoys research, teaching is by far his favourite bit of the job bringing a fascinating but relatively unknown period and region of history to a wider audience.
