Dr Thomas O'Connor is a Senior Dentist with the Cambridge Community Dental Services, and Honorary Dental Surgeon with Addenbrooke's Cambridge University Teaching Hospitals Trust. He is a member of the Cambridge Postgraduate Dental Education Committee, and delivers courses and lectures to medics and dentists, locally and nationally. Thomas is a CLAHRC Fellow with responsibility for dental treatment under General Anaesthesia. He is a supervisor in Quality Improvement for undergraduate medical students at Cambridge University Clinical School. He is joining the team delivering the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Research, Education and Leadership. He is a member of the National Guideline Development Group for prevention disease.
For small group teaching, Dr O'Connor uses a variety of interactive lectures and workshop learning, based around the individual educational objectives of each student. He is currently undertaking the MSt in Medical Education.
Medical and dental education: I am starting the Postgrad Cert in Medical Education (ICE) in Oct, planning to continue to the MSt.
I have undertaken a year as Quality Improvement Fellow (Health Education East of England / The King’s Fund), with emphasis on Quality Improvement Projects.
I deliver lectures and courses at Addenbrookes to medics, dentists and dental nurses: current focus is on triage, management and treatment of dental / orofacial emergencies.
I deliver lectures and courses for the British Dental Association : current focus is on ethics and consent.
I am clinical lead for the Dental Therapists within the Community Dental Service: focus is on delivering evidence-based and patient-specific prevention.
