Tony Padman studied journalism at the University of London and then undertook a series of short courses in advanced news writing, media law and interviewing skills. He began his journalism career in 2000 as a reporter and feature writer on his local newspaper, The Ham&High covering the boroughs of Camden and Westminster. He now writes news and features for a range of national newspapers including The Guardian, The Daily Mail, The Daily Express and various magazines.
He took his teaching qualification in 2008 and then returned to the University of London – this time as a sessional journalism lecturer to first year students. He also teaches journalism to adults and 6th form students at Central St Martins School of Art & Design in London.
Tony Padman has designed a journalism course using his own skills, experience and work portfolio, which is intended to give students the confidence and tools they require for a career in journalism and to show them alternative styles of writing. His courses consist of mini lectures, group practical work, use of his own news and features articles, short film clips and giving feedback throughout to students on what they have done well and how they can improve their writing to reach the next level.
