Institute of Continuing Education (ICE)

Continuing education is currently one of the most exciting, prominent and fastest changing fields in global higher education. The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) is an established leader in the field, tracing its roots back to 1873. ICE is based at the historic Madingley Hall campus, four miles west of Cambridge.

As identified in the Government's Industrial Strategy, continuing education will be central to upskilling and re-skilling sectors and communities affected by technological change or Brexit. It also serves as an essential gateway to higher education for mature students.

Whether mid-career health professionals learning about genomic medicine, mid-life adults seeking to change careers in emerging sectors such as coaching, creative writing or science communication, or retirees studying the history of art or philosophy, ICE provides world-class courses, drawing on the resources of one of the world's best universities, for adults from all backgrounds.

ICE currently enrols over 4,000 students each year on short courses and undergraduate and postgraduate award-bearing courses. We have ambitious plans to double the number of enrolments over the next four years.

We seek to appoint an Assistant Director (Academic) to work with the Director of the Academic Centres Division to define and deliver key strategic projects in relation to teaching and learning at the Institute. This will involve a focus on effective assessment practices, quality assurance, and excellence and innovation in teaching. The Assistant Director (Academic) will maintain an academic profile within the Institute; leading, developing, managing and teaching courses across their area of disciplinary expertise, and playing a leading role in providing academic development opportunities for colleagues, particularly ICE-employed Teaching Officers and Teaching Associates. The role will also include a responsibility for line management of colleagues in other academic roles within the Academic Centres Division as determined by the Director of Academic Centres.

A record of achievement in relevant posts within the higher or continuing education sectors is required. The successful candidate will be a driven and skilled academic leader qualified to doctoral level and preferably with a postgraduate qualification in teaching and learning. They will be able to demonstrate a clear interest in, and commitment to, continuing education.
