The course traces the evolution of the Hollywood musical from the beginnings of the sound revolution in 1929, through its glory years in classical Hollywood to its near disappearance at the end of the studio era, and its occasional revival in recent years through The Producers and Chicago. This is the story of the emergence of a genuinely American art form and a distinctly cinematic approach to music theatre.
