Rogier van der Weyden. Portrait of a Lady, c. 1460. National Gallery of Art, Washington.

Long after the death of Jan Van Eyck in 1441, Early Netherlandish art continued to flourish through a great variety of artists such as Roger van der Weyden, Dieric Bouts, Hugo van der Goes, Geertgen tot Sint Jans and Hans Memling. In addition to these painters we shall be looking at manuscript illumination and early printing. The late 15th century also witnessed crucial political and religious developments. This course aims to provide an introduction to Early Netherlandish art of the late medieval period against a wider cultural, social and political background.
