Crime fiction' covers a multitude of subgenres. This course looks at the one we now know as 'the thriller', beginning with the first recognized novel of a type familiar from print, film, and television, Erskine Childers's The Riddle of the Sands. We will address the question of whether crime fiction's attention to social problems is intended to alarm, polemicise and instruct as well as to entertain. You will be expected to have some knowledge of such authors as Eric Ambler, Graham Greene, and Helen MacInnes.
