Over one million species of animals and plants have been identified and named, but this is probably less than a quarter of the total! This biodiversity is being lost at an alarming rate as a result of human activities. In this course we will investigate why conserving species and habitats is important and the role that biodiversity plays in maintaining ecosystem processes that we rely on, such as food production and climate control. We will explore methods for surveying different groups of animals and plants, how to begin identifying them, and some straightforward techniques that can be used to interpret biological data.
