Today we live in a consumer society and our prized consumer goods include smart phones and laptops. When did our consumer society begin and what were the new goods that past societies wanted to acquire? This course explores the growth in ownership of consumer goods, from pewter, bedding and small items of silver in the late Middle Ages, through to clocks, looking glasses and goods associated with the growing popularity of chocolate, coffee and tea, accessible to almost all by 1800.
