MSt in Historic Environment

This exciting new postgraduate degree successfully connects archaeological theory and research with modern policy and practice in the management and conservation of landscapes, parks and gardens. It will provide a two-year, part-time route to a full University of Cambridge Master’s degree.
This hands on course has been designed to be flexible, part-time and accessible to those in full- or part-time employment and for international students. The course is studied over two years from September 2013 to July 2015 in short, intensive study blocks, of between three and nine days each.
Who is it for?
Providing essential knowledge and practical skills for current issues, this unique course is designed for practitioners and policy-makers working within the historic environment in both the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. The programme would also be relevant to recent graduates with an interest in developing a career in the field of historic environment and volunteers or those working in their own communities with a personal interest in the field, offering a sound foundation for further study and research.
Successful applicants will become affiliated to a Cambridge college where they will be members of the wider graduate community as well as enjoy full access to the facilities of the University.
What will I be studying?
The MSt provides a systematic understanding of
- principles and policy governing historic environment protection and planning
- the management, practicalities, and main issues involved in monument protection
- the conservation and restoration of historic landscapes
- academic theory, concept, and current research
- training in research techniques in the historic environment and their application
You will also have the opportunity to undertake self-directed, original research under the direction of a University of Cambridge supervisor.
The full Year 1 and Year 2 syllabus will be available soon.
What can I go on to do?
The MSt is a research degree, and successful completion of the MSt at a high grade may allow you to progress to an EdD or PhD either at the University of Cambirdge or another institution.
Fees
The course fees will be published soon. Applicants will be responsible for their own college fees (usually c.£450 per annum) and expenses incurred during residential events.
Admissions procedure and how to apply
Graduate work in Cambridge is intense and very intellectually demanding and so the University has high academic entry requirements. Applicants are expected to have either an Honours degree (at the UK standard of a good 2:1), a Grade Point Average of 3.7 or higher, or to produce evidence of relevant and equivalent experience and their fitness to read for a Master's degree.
The MSt is not a distance learning course and attendance in Cambridge for the residential sessions is compulsory. It is therefore essential that all applicants are available to attend all the residential teaching events.Further guidance regarding the application process and provisional dates for the residential teaching blocks will be available soon.
Applications and supporting documentation will be submitted online from October 2013. Further details will be available soon.
