The use of sensors has become widespread. We find them in smart phones and let them enter our smart homes and cities. Sensors play a critical role in modern manufacturing, keeping factories safe and operational. Modern healthcare is unthinkable without sensors, from large MRI scanners to small portable continuous diabetes monitors. For hundreds of years sensors and measurement have underpinned scientific discovery. We will cover the fundamentals of measurements and sensing in areas such as physics, chemistry and biology. We will discuss current trends in sensor technologies and applications, and explore the ethical and societal implications arising from the collection and analysis of huge amounts of data.
