Dr Barbara Warnock is the Education and Outreach Manager for The Wiener Library, where she researches and develops exhibitions drawn from the Library’s unique collections of material on the Nazi era and the Holocaust. Recent exhibitions she has curated or co-curated include A Bitter Road: Britain and the Refugee Crisis of the 1930s and 1940s andOn British Soil: Victims of Nazi Persecution in The Channel Islands. She also develops workshop programmes for schools, undergraduates and post-graduates, and has given many talks on the themes of refugees to Britain and topics relating to the Holocaust.
She was a history teacher and examiner for many years, and has also been an undergraduate tutor at Birkbeck College, University of London. She uses a range of media in her teaching, and encourages independent thought and critical thinking in her students.
I am currently using The Wiener Library’s archives to research and curate an exhibition to be held at the Library entitled London 1938: Defending ‘Degenerate’ German Art, which will examine an exhibition held in London in 1938 on twentieth century German art. The 1938 exhibition showcased work by artists being persecuted by the Nazi regime. Our exhibition and accompanying catalogue, for which I have produced a chapter on refugees who came to Britain from Germany in the 1930s, explore the contexts in terms of Nazi cultural ideas, the concept of ‘degenerate’ art and refugee networks in Britain in the 1930s.
I am also engaged in researching a future exhibition on a German émigré photographer who established their studio in London in 1933. The Wiener Library holds an extensive collection of her photographs and I plan to produce a book in connection with this exhibition which reproduces some of her work and explores her life and its historical context.
I have also recently prepared a chapter drawn from my PhD research on post-First World War Austria for an edited volume, and am in the process of preparing a book proposal based upon my PhD research.
