Martin's team work on the biology of the opportunistic human pathogen and multi-drug resistant ‘superbug’, Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Martin serves on a number of national and international funding panels, and is also a senior editor for a prestigious microbiology journal. He is Chair of the Microbiology Society Prokaryotic Division, where he is involved in organising sessions at the annual Society conference (among many other things). He works for the UK Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Trust as a Scientific Advisor on CF airway infection.
Martin has lectured for several years on International Summer Programmes on topics ranging from genome sequencing to extraterrestrial life. A traditionalist when teaching – he likes the tried-and-tested lecture format, but also engages with the audience while talking, giving these sessions a distinctly “interactive” feel. Martin is in love with Science generally and with the world of Microbiology in particular, and hopes that some of his enthusiasm will rub off on those who attend his courses.
