Richard Sidebottom is an Affiliated Lecturer & PhD researcher at the Centre of Development Studies, Cambridge University; his PhD thesis is entitled the Market framing of Development in the Cotton Textile and Apparel sector in Sub-Saharan Africa. Richard has over 20 years’ experience in global financial markets most of which as a Fund manager in London & Singapore managing a multi-asset portfolio in developing countries.
Richard has a teaching style which uses a mixture of multi-media and encourages active class participation. The pace is fast but with a focus on the practical and contemporary aspects of development issues. This is designed to facilitate workplace relevance, to appreciate the multi-faceted nature of development problems and to emphasise the importance of prioritisation, negotiation and debating skills.
Richard’s interests are focused on the mechanisms by which market and technical innovations interact to impact real people and practical sustainable development. This is reflected in his consultancy roles for the International Labour Organisation; Fairtrade cotton in Africa; and Entrepreneurship & Aid for the Templeton Foundation, as well an Advisory board role for the Cotton Action Research Collaboratory at the Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership and research in Tanzania for the Smart Villages Rural Electrification research project (www.e4sv.org).
