Seb Falk is a Fellow in History of Science at Girton College. He holds degrees from the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge. He has lectured in the History Faculty and Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Cambridge. His research focusses on the instruments and methods of astronomy used by monks and the relationship between science and religion in the Middle Ages.
He is a BBC New Generation Thinker and has made radio programmes and short films on medieval science and literature for the BBC. His book about medieval science, The Light Ages, was published by Penguin in 2020.
At ICE Seb contributes to the International Summer Programme. Formerly a school teacher, he loves to entertain students with visually rich lectures and encourages discussion. Students love to learn how to use an astrolabe or to pick out fine details from medieval manuscripts. Seb enjoys arousing a sense of childlike wonder among adult students and encouraging new respect for the achievements of the past.
