Liz Carter is a local and family history researcher, who enjoys sharing her knowledge with adult learners. In 1988, Liz turned an interest in family history into a small, home-based business ‘Backtracks’ and is a member of various local and family history societies. She joined the University of Cambridge ICE team in 1996 as a part-time tutor and is also a sessional tutor for the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) for Eastern and East Midlands regions and as a tutor for the Rothsay Education Centre, Bedford and The Settlement, Letchworth. Topics of her lectures include The Victorian Criminal- from Fagin to Jack the Ripper, Adventurous Women Travellers; Life in the Union Workhouse andRogues , Vagabonds & Paupers - 500 Years of Poverty.
Liz's lectures are delivered using PowerPoint presentations to illustrate key points or provide examples of important documents. Wherever feasible, online resources are investigated and incorporated into lectures to provide variety- there is a wealth of historical documentation now available and sharing 'finds' with students is a delight. Discussions and debates in small and larger groups are encouraged. A class favourite is to participate in acting out historic events using copied original documents, an enjoyable way to inform future learning.
