Sarah Buckingham has worked for 30 years in a broad range of roles in historic conservation and archaeology in local authorities and Historic England and has specialised in law, policy and practice of conservation and on the reform of these systems. She also has a strong background in planning and worked for the Planning Inspectorate for 3 years. She is now the Conservation and Design Team Leader at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. She holds a Masters Degree in Historic Conservation and is both a chartered Town Planner and a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries.
She is now working towards a Professional Doctorate at the University of Hertfordshire, where she is specialising in post- conflict reconstruction, concepts of authenticity and the role of traditional building crafts in reconstruction. She has a strong commitment to heritage education and supporting new practitioners wishing to enter the profession or colleagues at the start of their careers.
- Commitments to heritage education, including delivering lectures to post-graduate conservation courses – e.g. University College London, the Ironbridge Institute, and the Architectural Association
- Research, field work and written contributions to the “Buildings of England” volume revision for Cornwall, dealing with geology, building materials and local building traditions (due for publication in 2014).
- Contribution to academic publications on Egyptian ceramics, including in 2011 joint editorship of the festschrift in honour of Janine Bourriau by the Macdonald Institute for Archaeological Research, Cambridge.
- Personal leadership development through selection for the Clore Cultural Leadership Short Course Programme, successfully completed in January 2011.
- Personal research and investigation into the archaeology and architectural history of the Middle East, with particular interest in Mediaeval Cairo, and occasional work to support visiting Iraqi scholars through the British Institute for the Study of Iraq.
