Institute of Continuing Education (ICE)

To ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of our students and staff, the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE) has taken the difficult decision to suspend face-to-face teaching with immediate effect until further notice. Madingley Hall will also be closed to students during this time.

While the site will be closed for face-to-face teaching, we will strive to minimise disruption for students’ learning as follows:

• Award-bearing qualifications: We are transferring ICE-delivered award bearing teaching into distance learning formats for this interim period. While face-to-face teaching is an important part of ICE’s blended learning approach, we are committed to supporting students to complete their qualifications on time. Programme teams will be contacting students with further information.

• Non-award bearing face-to-face short courses: Teaching of these courses is now suspended until 31 July 2020. Programme teams will be contacting students to either rebook for a later date or to issue a refund.

• Fully online courses: Delivery of these courses will continue as per the teaching schedule, unless informed otherwise.

• International Summer Programme and Pre-University Programme: We have taken the decision to cancel our summer programmes, which were scheduled to take place in July and August 2020. Programme teams will be contacting students to offer the option to re-book for 2021 or to receive a refund. We are also hoping to offer a programme of remote teaching during the summer.

The situation is obviously unpredictable and subject to change, but all of my colleagues remain committed to delivering as many courses as possible via remote delivery, rescheduling those that cannot move to remote delivery and, at all times, maintaining the quality of our delivery.  We are here to support our community of adult learners.

Lastly, to close, I am very grateful to all students who have contacted me offering best wishes to the ICE and Madingley Hall teams – my colleagues and I would like to extend our thanks for your support.  We’ve been offering lifelong learning since 1873 and we certainly have no plans to stop.

With warmest regards,

Dr James Gazzard
Director of Continuing Education
University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education
