Our two-week virtual Pre-University Summer Programme provides high school students, aged 16-18, with an opportunity to get a taste of future undergraduate study. Whatever your current interests, you will discover new disciplines and topics that will push you outside your comfort zone and challenge your perceptions. The programme also offers sessions on study and research skills, how to apply to a UK University, and careers.

Schedule and delivery

All content for this two-week programme running from 19-30 July 2021 will be accessible through a secure Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), which is restricted to students on the programme only and monitored by our team on a regular basis. The virtual Pre-University Summer Programme runs for two weeks and content will remain available to access on the VLE for 5 weeks after the programme has finished.

Welcome week: Before the programme starts

A week before your programme starts you will receive an email from our Teaching & Learning (TEL) team confirming your VLE login details. Once you have logged into the VLE, you should:

  • Access the ‘Programme Information’, ‘Welcome’ and ‘Meet the group’ areas.
  • Carry out any technical checks, including video checks.
  • View the VLE ’Online course tour’ and familiarise yourself with your learning environment.
  • Watch the welcome videos.
  • Introduce yourself to the Programme Director and other students using the meet the group forum.
  • Access and complete any reading or other preparation suggested in advance of the programme.

Study weeks: programme delivery, video content and study time

  • You will be taught largely through a series of pre-recorded videos.
  • 3-4 talks will be released each day, Monday to Friday, across the two weeks
  • We suggest that you set aside approximately 3-4 hours of study time per day, across each week to watch the programme videos, view materials and resources and complete each day’s content and activities. This does not need to be done in one sitting, you have the flexibility to access content when and where you want, and to go back and review it as often as you wish
  • There will be an opportunity for you to engage in written form with fellow students via the group forums
  • Some content may also have elements of optional live discussions via Zoom webinars

At the end of the programme

  • Content will remain available on the VLE for 5 weeks after the programme has finished
  • Forums will close for postings on the Monday after the programme, but existing messages will still be visible for 5 weeks after the programme has finished
  • You will receive a certificate of participation via email within a week of the programme finishing. (Certificates will be sent to participants who contribute constructively to discussion topics set for the talks and to live elements for the duration of the programme. Details about minimum participation requirements will be provided in advance of the programme.)
