Undergraduate Certificates

We offer two Certificate in Creative Writing courses which run concurrently. They can be studied independently of each other, and in any order. Both offer the chance to explore a range of genres and literary styles as a way of stimulating your own writing voice. They are designed for anyone who wants to pursue a creative writing project – whether fiction or non-fiction – and provide you with the chance to experiment in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.

These courses are designed for those who have completed a Certificate course or who have appropriate knowledge, experience and enthusiasm in this field. The three termly units will identify and consolidate existing strengths in your own writing and encourage creative experimentation.

NEW for 2019, this postgraduate certificate is aimed at published writers, teachers, graduates of creative writing courses and healthcare professionals and other public sector workers who want to improve their ability to teach creative writing.

This fully matriculated Cambridge University Master's degree is designed for those who wish to develop high-level skills in creative writing both in fiction and non-fiction literatures. The MSt is taught over two years in short, intensive study blocks. It has been designed to be accessible to those in full- or part-time employment and to international students.

Short courses and online courses in Creative Writing

If you're thinking of embarking on further study, or simply want to brush up your skills, our short courses provide the perfect opportunity to dip your toe in the water. Courses are open to everyone, with no previous knowledge or experience required - and you can choose either to study online or via face-to-face tuition.

Creative Writing Summer Programme

Our International Summer Programmes have been welcoming participants from all over the world since 1923. Join adult students of all ages and backgrounds for an intensive learning experience.

Bursaries and student loans available

If you are new to higher education, you could be eligible for a bursary award. You will also be able to pay your fees in instalments, and you may also have access to part-time student loans.

Midge Gillies 

Ms Midge Gillies is the author of seven non-fiction books, including biographies of Amy Johnson and Marie Lloyd. In The Barbed-Wire University (Aurum Press, 2011) she explores what it was really like to be an Allied Prisoner of War in the Second World War. She is the author of Writing Lives (CUP, 2009) and co-author, with Sally Cline, of Literary Non-Fiction: A Writers’ & Artists’ Companion (Bloomsbury Academic, 2015). She studied history at Girton College and has written for a range of national, international and regional newspapers and magazines. Her book about army wives from the Crimean War to the present day was published in August 2016. For three years she was Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge and is currently Director of the Institute of Continuing Education's Undergraduate Certificates and Diplomas in Creative Writing. She is the Institute’s Teaching Officer for Creative Writing.
