Institute of Continuing Education

We offer a range of language courses, some of which are aimed at beginners, while others offer progression for students wishing to build on previous study. All courses are held in the target language and taught by native speakers. You will grow in confidence as you master the basic grammar and improve your communication, as well as reading and listening skills in a living language. You will also feel enriched by broadening your knowledge of the cultural context of the country whose language you are studying.

We also offer courses in Classical Greek and Latin as part of our Classics programme. Studying these ancient languages will enable you to read and understand the historical background of such texts as Homer, Lysias, Aristophanes, Juvenal, Ovid and Cicero and allow you to explore the building blocks upon which many modern languages are founded.

Jocelyn Wyburd

Jocelyn Wyburd is ICE’s Academic Director in Languages and her main role is as Director of the University of Cambridge’s Language Centre. She is qualified to teach French, German, Italian and English as a foreign language. She has research interests in applied linguistics and new technologies, and a wider interest in developing environments, infrastructure and curriculum which encourage and enhance student learner autonomy, supported by ever changing new technologies. She has been very active in outreach work to schools to promote and support language study while championing widening access agendas.

Language tutors

Language courses at ICE are taught by tutors whose work spans many languages and a wide range of research areas. Our current tutors’ backgrounds include (to take a few examples) working as translators, interpreters and university lecturers throughout the world. Many of our tutors have worked or work for the Department of Modern and Medieval Languages at the University of Cambridge. All our tutors support language learning and the promotion of cross-culture ties, with our French tutor Mme Francine Rouanet-Démocrate receiving the award of ‘Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques’ (similar to MBE) in acknowledgement of her efforts to forge links between France and the United Kingdom.
