The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), based at Madingley Hall, provides adult part-time students with a gateway to the academic excellence of Cambridge. We now seek to appoint a dynamic Director of Teaching and Learning to ensure that all of our courses optimally enable our students to achieve their educational goals.

Whether supporting learning for professional development or personal enrichment, ICE's role is to form and sustain accessible, welcoming and diverse communities of learning and collaboratively design and deliver responsive short courses and award-bearing undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in close partnership with the Collegiate University.

We have ambitious plans to significantly grow student enrolments over the next four years. Our new strategy places a greater emphasis on professional and postgraduate programmes (including postgraduate apprenticeship training), whilst maintaining a series of open access short courses and undergraduate sub-degrees in a broad range of liberal arts and vocational topics.

The Director of Teaching and Learning is responsible for leading the translation of ICE's strategy into a broad portfolio of academically rigorous and market-relevant academic courses. They will line manage the multidisciplinary team of Academic Directors and TEL specialists, including academic oversight of the Panel Tutor pool, and support them to deliver our ambitious goals.

Reporting to the Director of Continuing Education, as part of ICE's Senior Management Team, the Director of Teaching and Learning will work closely across the Institute with fellow Directors and senior colleagues in order to successfully deliver ICE's strategy. They will also engage regularly with University of Cambridge faculties and departments to ensure ICE's courses closely mirror the wider University's academic agenda.

The successful candidate will be a driven and skilled academic leader, aware of current HE policy and market trends, qualified to doctoral level and preferably with a postgraduate qualification in teaching and learning. They will be able to demonstrate a clear interest in, and commitment to, continuing education.

Experienced in the leadership and management of innovative curriculum design, pedagogy / andragogy and assessment within established UK university settings, they will exhibit a student-centred, collaborative and commercially aware approach. They will also have an advanced understanding of quality assurance and continuous improvement within the QAA framework. Preferably, candidates will have first-hand involvement of developing pure and applied / professional courses in a range of fields and working with professional accrediting bodies. They will have an appreciation of issues pertaining to student welfare including pastoral support and post-completion employability.

Importantly, the successful candidate must be able to evidence a facilitative and empowering style of effective line management of academics and academic-related staff which respects academic freedom whilst ensuring that new courses are developed and existing programmes supported in line with the strategy. They will also have a track record of delivering change management projects, effectively managing budgets and supporting organisational improvement and growth within the higher education sector.

Informal enquiries are encouraged and can be made to the Director of Continuing Education, Dr James Gazzard (james.gazzard@ice.cam.ac.uk). Other questions about this vacancy or the application process may be directed to: ICEHRAdministration@admin.cam.ac.uk.

Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check.
