Jerry Toner is a Fellow and Director of Studies in Classics at Churchill College. He is a cultural historian whose work has a focus on history "from below". His book, Popular Culture in Ancient Rome (Polity, 2009), analysed the life of the non-elite in Roman society but he has also written on slavery, ancient disasters and the Games. His classes encourage collaboration and involve looking at a range of texts and images. There have been thirty-six translations of his books into seventeen languages. He has recently published Risk in the Roman World with Cambridge University Press (2023).
