Empire was central to late 19th-century Europeans' ideas of themselves, their status and their national identity. They built or reconstructed empires within Europe and sought desperately to build empires outside Europe. This course looks at how the concept of empire helped shape the Europe that went into the First World War. This course complements Am22 or can be taken on its own.
