Jane Gregory joined ICE in 2018 as Teaching Associate for Science Communication. She is Academic Director of the Postgraduate Certificate in Practical Science Communication, and is developing further courses, both academic and for professional development.
Jane has taught science communication for nearly 30 years and has designed undergraduate and postgraduate courses for Imperial, UCL, Birkbeck and Manchester University. She is co-author of the long-serving textbook Science in Public (1998). Jane's teaching focuses on the public dimensions of science, technology and medicine, and has covered a variety of topics including globalisation, citizenship, science fiction and rejected knowledges, as well as the history, theory and practice of science communication. .
Her core research interest is in the role of public science communication in the emergence of new scientific ideas and in social change. A historian by discipline, her writing has explored the role of popularisation in the organisation of the astronomical community in post-war Britain; the science ‘brain drain’ of the 1960s, the commercialisation of the public sphere for science and the role of science communication in global equality.
Jane set up and managed the journal Public Understanding of Science in the early 1990s, and is now a member of its editorial board. She is also a board member of the journal Science Communication. She is also a founder member and now co-convenor of the London Public Understanding of Science Seminar, which is hosted by the London School of Economics.
Jane has a long-standing connection with life-long learning, her first short course, at 0Oxford University, led to her first book, Communicating Science (1990); she held a lectureship at Birkbeck, and, most recently, she organised evening classes in history of science for the Wilmslow Guild in Cheshire (https://www.wilmslowguild.org/).
