Mat is a panel tutor on the MSt in Coaching at the Institute of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge, an NHS consultant surgeon, a coach, and an educator. He is the undergraduate lead for Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgery at The University of Nottingham and at Nottingham University Hospitals; in addition to undergraduate clinical teaching, he also runs a student-selected module on coaching, mentoring and leadership. He is his hospital's lead for medical career support and development. His coaching focuses on doctors' careers, and he has delivered multiple invited talks related to career success. He co-facilitates the Association for Coaching co-coaching forum for Health and Social Care.
His teaching methods include information giving, skills development, group discussions, and workshops. He typically combines theoretical concepts with practical issues, believing that integrating both aspects is key in adult development. He tries to see the world through multiple lenses, and his teaching likewise encourages multiple perspectives, celebrates complexity, and takes a systemic approach.
