Max has worked with ICE since 2021 and he is the Course Director for the UGCert in Ecology. His research background is in tropical marine biology and ecology, but he has experience teaching across the Life Sciences ranging from topics including biochemistry and genetics through to animal behaviour and environmental science. Max currently works for an innovative start-up called rePLANET that is trying to design and implement new financial tools to fund landscape scale conservation and restoration initiatives using private finance, and he consequently spends a lot of his time thinking about the best ways to preserve biodiverse grasslands in Transylvania!
Since 2011 Max has accrued experience teaching across a range of ages and abilities in both formal and informal settings ranging from primary school to postgraduate level. From 2011 to 2019 he worked for Operation Wallacea, an ecological research and education organisation, where he was responsible for the design and coordination of a coral reef ecology course which introduced students to the principles of marine biology using a mix of classroom sessions and in-water practical activities that were delivered using snorkelling and SCUBA diving. Max was also a founding member of the teaching team at the newly established Lincoln Medical School where he taught biomedical sciences on the foundation year; a one year programme designed to provide opportunities to students from educationally disadvantaged backgrounds who would historically be excluded from higher education with access to medical training. Most recently Max worked as a tutor for the Field Studies Council in London and Epping Forest where he delivered outdoor learning experiences and taught introductory ecological and geographical survey techniques.
Max enjoys working with people from diverse backgrounds and takes a highly collaborative approach in his teaching as he believes that student outcomes are maximised when there is equality in the student-teacher relationship.
