Dr Nicholas Evans is an Academic Clinical Lecturer in Stroke Medicine. Nick is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and has a particular interest in how teaching as a doctor in training affects the trainee’s learning and professional development (a subject of his Master’s in Medical Education).
I have been a tutor on the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education since 2013. I am a passionate medical educator, having been a clinical supervisor for over a decade and regularly teaching undergraduate and postgraduate trainees. I have held posts in the School of Clinical Medicine responsible for running clinical examinations and served on the Faculty Board. I am currently joint lead for the Clinical School’s INSPIRE programme (supported by the Academy of Medical Sciences and the Wellcome Trust) that aims to promote research skills and participation amongst students. I am a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College, and also a lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University and University College London.
The range of individuals and experience studying on the Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education makes for interesting discussions and a fantastic opportunity to learn from each other. It’s a great experience to facilitate the development of enthusiastic medical educators through both the organised sessions and role as a tutor.
My medical education research considers the dual role experienced by medical educators who are also doctors in training, and how this influences their own professional development. I also have interests in the use of simulation-based education and the association between selection metrics and subsequent performance in medical education. My primary research is in neurovascular imaging, in particular identification of the different processes underlying atherosclerosis (the hardening of arteries) and how these disease processes affect the brain. Understanding these aspects is facilitating novel treatments for atherosclerosis and potentially reducing the burden from cerebrovascular disease and dementia.
