Dr Thirza Pieters is a Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist and the clinical lead for the Psychological Medicine Service Royal Papworth Hospital, one of the largest specialist cardiothoracic hospitals in Europe.
Thirza completed her MSt in Medical Education in Cambridge in 2021 and has an interest in life long learning. Her dissertation research project focused on mapping the journey of new consultant psychiatrists through changing landscapes of learning and practice. The course shaped her view on the importance of work based learning during and after medical training.
Until recently, Thirza was employed by the Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine as Specialist in Clinical Communication Skills (CCS). This role involved developing, teaching and assessing medical interviewing components of CCS and providing professional input into the progressive development of communication aspects of medical education.
From 2012 to 2017 she was the Chair of the Liaison Psychiatry Faculty Curriculum and Education Committee (FECC) leading the revision of the national liaison psychiatry training curriculum and the development of an accredited postgraduate training pathway to allow the development of a more flexible workforce.
She is currently the Director of Medical Education for Cambridge and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust. In this role she is determined to involve trainees in every aspect of the organisation.
