Course Programme
10:00 A book for all Ages: Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quixote - Dr Rodrigo Cacho
11:15 Coffee
11:45 Drama, Dynamism, and Emotion: Baroque Sculpture in Europe - Dr Victoria Avery FSA
13:00 Finish
Dr Victoria Avery is an expert in European sculpture and loves the Baroque period for its high drama, remarkable dynamism and intense emotion. The combination of talented and inventive sculptors and wealthy and powerful patrons vying with each other led to the creation of some of the greatest sculptural masterpieces ever produced, which still cause awe and admiration in viewers today. Vicky’s lecture is intended as a fast-paced general introduction to the subject, starting in papal Rome with sculptors like Bernini and Algardi and their religious masterpieces, before moving to other key centres such as Paris, London and Seville. Come and see how marble, bronze, stucco and wood were pushed to their limits by artists keen to bring glory to God, their patrons and themselves.
