‘Martyrs’ – those who died for their faith – were both warriors and important symbols in some of the most important ideological battles in early modern Europe. In this course we’ll consider why the concept of martyrdom became so contested, analyse what this might tell us about religion, politics, culture and violence in early modern Europe more widely, and evaluate the modern legacy of this.
