The Undergraduate Diploma in International Relations provides a broad overview of international relations theory and method, and the connections between ideas, evidence and interpretation specific to the subject of global politics. The course examines a variety of international relations theories, looks at international institutions and conflict, and focuses on a range of regional politics to develop a more granular understanding of International Relations.

The Diploma provides a natural progression from the Undergraduate Certificate in International Relations, and is also suited to those who already have considerable knowledge in this field and/or who have a professional interest in the study of International Relations.

Our undergraduate courses are now being delivered entirely online, enabling students to study flexibly with the University of Cambridge from anywhere in the world.

We offer a range of tuition fee bursaries to promote access to and participation in continuing education. This includes Cambridge Thousand Futures Bursary that supports adults who have been most affected by COVID-19.

Requirements

Entry requirements

The Diploma is designed for students who have either completed the Undergraduate Certificate in International Relations satisfactorily or who have an equivalent qualification. Applicants with the following will be considered:

  • Satisfactory completion of the Institute’s Undergraduate Certificate in International Relations
  • Relevant academic study of International Relations at FHEQ 4 or equivalent
  • A relevant undergraduate or postgraduate qualification i.e. Human Geography, Political science, Sociology, Environmental studies or similar cross disciplinary topics.

Certificate or Diploma level?

The Diploma level course is suitable for those who have successfully completed the Undergraduate Certificate course or who have comparable knowledge and experience at FHEQ level 4 or equivalent.

If you have none of the above, we would recommend you consider applying for our Undergraduate Certificate in International Relations. If you feel strongly that the Diploma level is the right course for you, you may still apply and the Academic Director will consider your application. However, acceptance onto the course will be entirely at the discretion of the Institute.

English language requirement: If English is not your first language, you need to be able to prove you meet the University of Cambridge English language requirements on application. For further information, see English language requirements for Undergraduate Certificates, Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas

Technical requirements

For the 2021-2022 Academic Year this course is being taught remotely. This means there will be no face-to-face teaching and you will not need to be present in person in Cambridge, although there is an expectation that you will attend synchronous teaching sessions. The course content will be delivered, and the learning outcomes met, through the use of video-based teaching platforms and a dedicated course Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

You will therefore need to have access to:

- the internet via a computer, laptop, tablet or other smart device

- speakers or headphones in order to hear any pre-recorded material

- a webcam and microphone for any interactive sessions which may be available

Once you are logged into the VLE you can familiarise yourself with the learning environment. There is also guidance about how to access course materials and activities.
