Welcome to a two-week journey through the world’s most powerful medium. Get inside the world of cinema that has been capturing the hearts and minds for over 100 years. This course is not about one director, nor one country nor even one genre: it aims to get you thinking about the magic of the medium itself. Insights gained can be applied to any area of film from shorts, experimental, documentary or even musical. Film clips shown will mix classics with hidden gems, art house with Hollywood. Drawing on the latest film theory and practice, students will experience film from the inside, as a living organism, whose past you should know, whose present you can enjoy and of whose future you could be a part. Finally, the course will aim to help students explore which job area they could be suited for in the wide-ranging field that is the film industry.
In exploring film from this dynamic angle, the course unpacks the many facets of the film industry. This close analysis will serve to familiarise participants with the very different skills which need to combine to produce the 'magic of film'. The final session, particularly, will help course participants to explore whether there are career opportunities suited to their own skills and aptitude within the film industry, and offer pointers which might help them achieve these goals.
