Helen Smith taught at the University of East Anglia for over 20 years and was convenor of the MA in Biography and Creative Non-Fiction. She ran various modules at undergraduate and post-graduate level; besides non-fiction she also convened modules on nineteenth century Russian fiction, Modernism and nature writing.
She is the author of The Uncommon Reader: A Life of Edward Garnett (published by Jonathan Cape and Farrar, Straus & Giroux) which was the Sunday Times Literature Book of the Year and shortlisted for the Simply Foxed Biography Prize. She is currently researching the life of an early twentieth century photographer.
Helen has delivered seminars in-person and online and particularly values and enjoys workshopping students' own writing. She has taught many mature students and finds the life experience, diversity and commitment they bring to seminars immensely rewarding.
Helen will be teaching on the Undergraduate Certificate in Creative Writing: Creative Non-Fiction and the Undergraduate Diploma in Creative Writing: Advanced Non-Fiction for the 2024-25 academic year.
