Do you read stories to your children? Do you play tennis, or go swimming with your children? Do you cook, sing, or garden with your children?
Have you ever considered doing some maths with your children? Would you like to encourage a child whose interest hasn't yet been engaged by maths? Or are you looking for inspiration on how to support a child who is already keen? Come and discover how you can explore maths in far more family-friendly forms than just homework!
This free workshop is a taster for a series of Maths for Parents workshops taking place in autumn. It is delivered in collaboration with the NRICH Maths Project, and is for parents, carers, grandparents etc who would like to know more about enjoying mathematics with their children. The workshop will introduce you to a world of rich activities you can share, focusing on encouraging exploration, thinking and problem-solving.
No prior knowledge of maths is required. Come and experience the pleasure of working mathematically. Become hooked by puzzling problems, get excited by making mathematical discoveries, enjoy the challenge of finding a strategy for winning a game… and be inspired to return home and enjoy some of the activities with your children (as your homework!).
Please note that this session is designed for adults only.
Charlie Gilderdale worked at the University of Cambridge Faculty of Education with trainee mathematics teachers before joining the Millennium Mathematics Project where he is responsible for developing secondary-level resources for the NRICH website. His resources challenge students to think mathematically and offer opportunities for learning the subject through exploration and discussion. He has carried out Professional Development work with teachers in the UK and abroad and has collaborated with various organisations.
Fran Watson was a mathematics teacher for 13 years before joining the Millennium Mathematics Project as their Roadshow Co-ordinator in 2013. She now co-ordinates NRICH’s primary professional development and runs mathematics workshops in schools and at conferences for both teachers and students. Given the many wonderful opportunities to travel widely in her work, Fran enjoys the similarities between the teachers and learners from Singapore to Southend, and the Czech Republic to Cornwall, all of whom demonstrate curiosity and an enthusiasm for doing maths together which is at the heart of NRICH-ing mathematics.
