Institute of Continuing Education (ICE)

The University of Cambridge’s Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), based at Madingley Hall, offers a vibrant and diverse array of courses for personal enrichment and academic and professional development. Courses range from non-award-bearing courses, many of which are open-access, to innovative part-time Master of Studies (MSt) degrees. Around 300 ICE panel tutors, across a variety of academic disciplines, make a vital contribution to the quality of teaching, learning and student support.

The CertHE in Pre-Medical Studies is a full time 120-credit course (delivered at FHEQ level 4) which provides an entry pathway for mature students (21+) to medicine degrees at universities in the East of England. It is anticipated the course will be attractive to career changers who have the motivation and aptitude to become doctors, but who do not have the necessary level-three qualifications (A-levels or equivalent) to apply for medical school. ICE has developed the CertHE in partnership with the University of Cambridge, University of East Anglia, and Anglia Ruskin University who will accept it as an alternative entry qualification to A-levels. Please note that students will not automatically progress onto medicine degrees at these universities, and they must undergo the rigorous application process and meet the expected standard before they are awarded a place at medical school.

The content has been mapped to the FHEQ and SEEC level four descriptors and the relevant parts of the AQA Biology, Chemistry, and Physics curricula. The course will be delivered using a blended approach with an ‘online to in-person teaching’ ratio of 1:5 to maximise access opportunities for mature learners across the region who may have considerable work and family commitments, while attempting to mirror the rigour and pace of study at a medical school. Students will be taught using pre-recorded lectures, and synchronous online and in-person workshops alongside lab-based practical sessions.

We are currently seeking applications from suitably qualified individuals with expertise in teaching chemistry at level three. In the first instance, the appointed tutor will be responsible for the development of an introductory chemistry module which focusses on the fundamental principles of physical and inorganic chemistry. They will create a range of teaching and learning resources including pre-recorded lectures, consolidatory ‘homework’ tasks, and formative assessments, and they will contribute to the development of the summative assessment strategy. Beyond the module development the appointed tutor will contribute to the delivery of the CertHE starting in September 2022. They will deliver synchronous (live) teaching sessions both online and in-person, alongside marking and providing feedback on student assignments, and participating in team meetings to help curriculum development. It is anticipated that there will be significant pastoral support needs and the appointed individual may be asked to act as Personal Tutor to several students in the cohort.

Successful candidates may have a PhD in a relevant subject and experience teaching in Higher Education. More importantly, they must have experience teaching chemistry at level three and therefore have a comprehensive understanding of both the A-level curriculum and the content areas that students generally find more challenging. Experience teaching using a blended model incorporating synchronous and asynchronous activities would be beneficial, as would a higher or secondary education teaching qualification. A student-centred approach and an interest in supporting adult students from a broad range of educational and workplace backgrounds is essential.
