Dr Philip (Maty) Matyszak is a former journalist who became hooked on ancient history. His speciality is ancient Rome and he has written extensively on Rome’s greatest citizens and enemies, from his thesis Dominance in the Roman Senate, to his upcoming manuscript 24 Hours in Ancient Rome. His other interests include how arts and sciences developed in the Hellenistic era and mythology and its use in drama and propaganda- all whilst shovelling snow and trying not to get eaten by bears while living in the mountain backwoods of western Canada.
Maty's courses are designed to develop students' areas of interest through selected reading, mutual discovery of online and other resources and, above all, discussions, both live and in forums. Weekly sessions have a fixed framework of reading, lectures and quizzes, students are then encouraged to work with their tutor to expand their studies from this foundation.
