Dr Thomas O'Connor is Assistant Professor of Dental Education, University of Cambridge.
He is a Course Director on the Masters in Clinical Medicine programme, with responsibility for the Certificate in Clinical Research, Education and Leadership.
Thomas is Senior Dentist with the Special Care Dental Services, working under general anaesthetic and sedation at Addenbrooke’s Hospital Cambridge, The Princess of Wales Hospital Ely, and the West Suffolk Hospital. He is IASCD accredited procedural sedation mentor, and tutor in sedation and pain management for the Eastern Region FD programme. He is past president of the Association of Dental Anaesthetists, and previously Honorary Speciality Lecturer, in Dental Sedation and Pain Management UCL.
Thomas chaired the Education Section of the National Guidelines on General Anaesthetic in dentistry (2022) and was a Committee Member for the Public Health England National Guidelines for Delivery of Better Oral Healthcare (2019).
He is previous CLAHRC NIHR Fellow, and Quality Improvement Fellow with HEEoE / The King’s Fund.
Currently he is module lead for Clinical Leadership, Masters in Clinical Medicine, and a postgraduate supervisor, University of Cambridge.
He has received the Pierre Fauchard Academy Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Dentistry, and national poster prizes for his work in sedation and quality improvement. In 2019 he was honoured with the Ely Heroes Award as Most Amazing Professional, following nomination by patients.
For small group teaching, Dr O'Connor uses a variety of interactive lectures, workshop learning, and simulation, based around the individual educational objectives of each student.
He is a member of Wolfson College, Cambridge, and is proud to now work alongside Homerton College Cambridge in the delivery of the Masters in Clinical Medicine.
