Natasha teaches Creative Writing and specialises in fantasy fiction. She is a visiting lecturer at City University London, an associate lecturer at Bath Spa, and a day school tutor at ICE. She focuses on the historical context of fantasy and the processes by which fiction comes to be assigned a genre. One of her main interests is to experiment with —and to break away from —the kind of language often expected of the genre; another is to explore the ways in which it might be possible to do real-world research that informs even high fantasy stories.
She teaches with plenty of visuals and lots of class discussion, alongside optional writing exercises; students who are less keen about writing in class are free to sit back and watch, while those who are eager to dive in are welcome to.
Her first novel, The Watchmaker of Filigree Street, was published by Bloomsbury in 2015. The second, The Bedlam Stacks, will appear in August 2017.
Forthcoming novel, Pepperharrow (publication date forecast 2019) — alternative history focusing on the promulgation of the Constitution in 1889, in Japan, and the colonisation and prison systems of Hokkaido.
Forthcoming novel, Ariel — historical fantasy set at Blackfriars playhouse and following the boy company, The Children of the Chapel Royal, through the coronation of King James I.
Forthcoming novel, yet unnamed — alternative history focusing on events as they might have unfolded had England lost the Battle of Trafalgar.
