Cambridge Clinical Medicine Programme - Modular Study

What is Modular Study?

Attending individual modules within the Cambridge University Clinical Medicine Programme is a way to gain valuable insight without completing a full award bearing course. The modules available for modular study are listed below. Modules usually run over 5 days, and attendance in person is compulsory.

Studying for CPPD

The modules can be studied for continuing personal and professional development (CPPD) only. Students studying for CPPD (not for credit) attend the teaching sessions alongside award bearing students but do not complete the associated assignment. A certificate of attendance is given at the end of the course.

Please note that this module is for CPPD only. Should you decide at a later date to join the full award bearing course that this module forms part of, you will need to retake the module as part of the course and pay the full course fee. You would also need submit a new application and meet the advertised entry requirements.

Progression Options

The modules are part of the PG Certificate in Clinical Research Education and Leadership and the PG Diploma in Clinical Medicine. If you would like to study for an award bearing course please consider applying instead for the PG Certificate in Clinical Research Education and Leadership, which forms the first year of the progression route to the MSt in Clinical Medicine. Upon successful completion of the PG Certificate students would be eligible to apply for the one year PG Diploma in Clinical Medicine, and following this the one year MSt in Clinical Medicine.

How to Apply for Modular Study

You may apply for as many individual modules as desired. A separate application is required for each. Please submit your application as far in advance of the deadline as possible as modular applications are subject to an admissions process, and this can take several weeks.

Before you start your application, please have your application documents ready

To apply to study for CPPD modules you will need to provide:

  1. Curriculum Vitae
  2. You may need to meet the language requirements for study at Cambridge (see below)
  3. International students must ensure they have the correct Visa documentation, and those in full-time employment, whether in the UK or abroad, to work and study at the same time.

Language Requirements for study

All applicants are required to demonstrate competency in English at a high level before commencing the programme; students whose first language is not English must be able to satisfy the requirements below.

  • IELTS Academic: Overall score of 7.0 (a minimum of 7.0 in Listening, Writing and Speaking; 6.5 in Reading)
  • TOEFL Internet: Overall score of 100 (a minimum of 25 in each individual component)
  • CAE: Grade A or B (with at least 193 in each individual element) plus a Language Centre assessment
  • CPE: Grade A, B, or C (with at least 200 in each individual element)

Clinical Leadership

 

This one-off module of study is open to all specialties and is part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Research Education and Leadership. It is designed for Specialty Registrars or equivalent, GPs, dentists and newly appointed consultants.

 

Module aims: 

  • To develop students as healthcare leaders with the required knowledge, skills & capability to have a positive personal impact on the work of others in their clinical team and wider service.
  • To contribute to the development of emotional intelligence, resilience & political astuteness required to be a healthcare leader in a rapidly changing & challenging environment.
  • To develop students who are committed to safe and high-quality patient care.
  • To develop students who are confident in leading for improvement and leading across a wider system of healthcare.

 

There are eight themes within the Clinical Leadership Module:

  • Theme 1: Clinical Leadership in the NHS;
  • Theme 2: Self-awareness and personal leadership qualities;
  • Theme 3: Project/change management theories and practice;
  • Theme 4: The impact of effective leadership within the clinical arena and how to enhance leadership. Leadership resilience strategies;
  • Theme 5: Teams: An evidence-based approach to people management and developing high-performing teams;
  • Theme 6: Rescuing failing teams, managing difficult behaviour;
  • Theme 7: Improvement, strategic development, business planning & marketing;
  • Theme 8: Presenting projects, change management, organisational theory.  Change within large organisations – the NHS, learning from other industries.

Clinical Research

 

This stand-alone module of study open to all specialities and is part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Research Education and Leadership. It is designed for Specialty Registrars or equivalent, GPs, dentists and newly appointed consultants

 

Module aims:

  • To allow students to participate effectively in clinical research and to provide students with a framework to develop research ideas into publishable studies. 
  • Provide students with the knowledge to understand the importance of research activity in the future of clinical care within healthcare systems and tertiary health care institutions. 
  • To provide students with insight into study design, funding and management, and understanding of the regulatory environment in which research is conducted. 
  • Contribute to continuing professional development of healthcare professionals by providing knowledge of research and academic career pathways.

 

There are nine themes within the research module:

  • Theme 1: Understanding the role of research in clinical practice and the role of clinicians in conducting research, and the elements of good clinical practice; 
  • Theme 2: Effective review of the literature; 
  • Theme 3: Understanding research methodologies; 
  • Theme 4: The clinical study design process and ethical approval; 
  • Theme 5: Publication and dissemination; 
  • Theme 6: Funding applications and grant writing skills;
  • Theme 7: Statistics, data analysis and data presentation; 
  • Theme 8: Critically appraising the literature; 
  • Theme 9: Research career pathways.

Clinical Education

This stand-alone module of study is open to all specialties and is part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Research Education and Leadership. It is designed for Specialty Registrars or equivalent, GPs, dentists and newly appointed consultants.

 

Module aims: 

  • Ensure students develop advanced skills and motivation for teaching. 
  • Allow students to contribute to continuing development of healthcare professionals by stimulating inter-professional education. 
  • Develop students as teachers and prepare them for the high standards of revalidation and appraising of the educational aspect of their work.

 

There are five themes within the education module: 

  • Theme 1: Educational Theory 
  • Theme 2: Educational Supervision 
  • Theme 3: Evaluation and Quality of Teaching 
  • Theme 4: Technology in Education 
  • Theme 5: Academic and Teaching Skills

Healthcare Law

This stand-alone module of study open to all specialities and is part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Medicine. It is designed for Specialty Registrars or equivalent, GPs, dentists and newly appointed consultants. 

 

Module aims:

To enable students to explore, and develop their understanding of, the laws that govern and influence medical practice and the way professionals and institutions are regulated and held to account.

 

Content:

 The unit requires a commitment to pre-unit preparation, including some specific reading before and between class sessions.

  • An introduction to statute and case law relating to common clinical scenarios and healthcare management
  • An introduction to Human Rights and Equality legislation
  • The concepts of consent, capacity and autonomy
  • Mental Health law
  • The process and importance of complaints, quality assurance and learning
  • The regulation of healthcare professionals and institutions
  • End of life care and ceiling of care decisions

Advanced Clinical Leadership

This stand-alone module of study open to all specialities and is part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Medicine. It is designed for Specialty Registrars or equivalent, GPs, dentists and newly appointed consultants. This stand-alone module of study is open to those who have previously completed the ‘Clinical Leadership’ module either for CPPD study or as part of the Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Research Education and Leadership.

 

Module aims: 

This unit supports students to take on more significant leadership positions and effectively deliver improvements to clinical services. The curriculum maps to the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management Professional Standards and the NHS Leadership Framework. Subject to accreditation, candidates who successfully complete the module may be eligible for membership of other leadership organisations. 

  • Understand the impact of, and how to enhance, effective leadership within the clinical arena 
  • Improving leadership by inspiring shared purpose, leading with care, evaluation and connecting services 
  • Developing teams through shared vision, engagement, accountability via an evidence-based approach to people management 
  • Developing capability and influencing for results in large organizations

 

The eight themes (see below) in the Advanced Clinical Leadership Module will focus on the practical implantation and modification of effective leadership, specific to the workplace role of each candidate. This will culminate with the candidate producing a Quality Improvement Project report to a publishable standard with the option of submitting this for publication.

  4. Impact of effective leadership within the clinical arena, and resilience strategies;

Healthcare Informatics

 

This stand-alone module of study open to all specialities and is part of the Postgraduate Diploma in Clinical Medicine. It is designed for Specialty Registrars or equivalent, GPs, dentists and newly appointed consultants. 

 

Module aims:

The unit is designed to introduce students to the importance of Healthcare Informatics in a modern clinical setting to improve patient care through an understanding of the healthcare data needs of clinicians, health organisations, governments and patients.

  • Describe the various types / properties / structure / usage of multiple types of patient-level and aggregated data used in the field of healthcare
  • Describe the framework within which datasets are described, mandated / notified, implemented and reported in the NHS.
  • Describe the UK governance framework relating to the use of personal data in healthcare
  • Describe the differences between terminologies and classifications and their usage
  • Describe an approach to data stewardship and proper curation in the management of healthcare data
  • Describe the elements which underpin meaningful and safe interoperability in the context of personal healthcare data

 

Content:

  • The design, and wider implications, of information systems and data in a modern healthcare environment
  • The relevance of data models and data flows within the NHS
  • The importance of informatics in a modern health system and how this information can improve patient care
  • The impact of healthcare data
  • The structure and organisation of healthcare databases, systems and data storage
  • The governance, regulatory and ethical elements of healthcare data

The Clinical Medicine programme at ICE provides the following additional part-time, award-bearing courses and study options: The PG Certificate in Clinical Research Education and Leadership forms the first year of the progression route to the MSt in Clinical Medicine.
