We will explore activism in contemporary Western art using a variety of case studies. We cover key movements in modern art, such as Dadaism, Surrealism and Pop Art, along with emerging currents, such as Afro-Surrealism and ecological art. Reflecting on a variety of mediums from street art to needlework, the course will elicit engaging discussions about structural biases in the art world. We will also discuss environmental activism in heritage sites and the vandalism of colonial statues. Finally, we will consider the decolonisation of art history through an analysis of curatorial strategies and issues surrounding the restitution of artefacts. This is a 10 session course and must be taken with W410Pm03 in week 4.
