Institute of Continuing Education (ICE)

For African-Americans the writing of crime begins with writing of slavery, and can never ignore racial prejudice. Beginning with Douglass's Narrative of ... an American Slave, this course traces the ethnic inflection of the genre in work by Chester Himes, Toni Cade Bambara (on the Atlanta child murders), and contemporary bestseller Walter Mosley, with the evolving history of free, urban, and more prosperous African-Americans. This course pairs with and complements British Crime Writing. (Please note that the books studied contain representations of slavery, abuse, and violent (including sexual) crime, as well as strong language.)
