An age of heroes? The archaeology of the Homeric Epics

Join us as we critically examine the Homeric Epics through their origins, contents and interpretation. We will start with an introduction to archaeology, the Greek Bronze Age and the Epics. We will then examine the Iliad and the Odyssey through their archaeological and art historical point of view, on the way discussing arising issues. We will continue and conclude our course with in-depth analyses of the Epics’ archaeological and socio-political complexities, in order to reveal why and how they were so influential for the ancient Greeks and continue to be so. We will learn how to engage with past societies, to evaluate archaeological sources and interpretations, as well as to develop our research skills.

During this course, we will use substantial visual materials, including some documentary footage, and interactive exercises, as well as replicas of ancient artefacts. No prior knowledge is required, apart from a keen interest.
