Institute of Continuing Education (ICE)

This course addresses key issues in modern art, reflecting on the seismic changes that took place in the art world over the course of the 20th century. We will discuss a variety of art movements from Dadaism, Surrealism, and Abstract Expressionism to Pop Art and Neo Expressionism, meeting artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Salvador Dali, Leonora Carrington, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Anni Albers and Tracey Emin. Modern art has seen a radical exploration of approach and medium: we will consider spontaneity, emotion, abstraction, popular culture and the bizarre, as well as painting, readymades, photomontages, sculptures, textiles and photographs.
