Against the backdrop of Brexit, we discuss alternative approaches to regional integration. Traditionally, Asian states have been more hesitant about close-knit regional integration, preferring national autonomy and respecting the principle of 'non-interference' in other countries' internal affairs. In Asia, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is an important regional architecture but with very limited influence, compared with the EU. Why? What are the different historical backgrounds? What are the advantages and disadvantages of Asian and European approaches to regionalism? What do these mean to the UK as it navigates a new political and economic future? This programme encourages student discussions and debates on these topics and more.
