Like musicians and artists, scientific experimenters relied on instruments and the power of spectacle to demonstrate their ideas and inventions. Christopher Wren, leading English exponent of baroque architecture, played a key role in founding London’s Royal Society, which insisted on transmitting knowledge through demonstration rather than verbal authority.
