Britain's global decline, 1900-2000

It then discusses the First World War and its consequences for Britain’s global position, particularly where the relationships with other Great Powers was concerned. Next, the course assesses various aspects of the Second World War, including how Winston Churchill dealt with other war leaders and the consequences of the war where the British Empire was concerned. The course then turns to Britain’s changing role in the Cold War era. It examines how it adjusted to the new age of the Superpower, its difficult relationship with Europe, its ‘special’ relationship with the USA and its changing relationship with the Soviet Union. Lastly, it assesses Britain’s global position in the early post-Cold War years, and compares its place in the world at the end of the 20th century with its global standing at the start of the century.
