We examine how the ambitions of explorers, religious exiles, government officials and businessmen created the 'first' British Empire. We explore that empire's intellectual and cultural contexts, the role of profit-seeking companies, the social history of British settlements, interactions with native peoples, and the crisis of the late 18th century.
