"More than any part I've played, Medea engages the mind, body and soul." (Helen McCrory, Actor, National Theatre) "It's about these awful emotions – and these awful actions – that we're all capable of, if pushed far enough." (Diana Rigg, Actor, on playing Clytemnestra and Medea). Medea and Clytemnestra fascinate and terrify, are deeply recognisable, deeply alienating. Medea and the Oresteia are shot through with condemnation of 'these awful emotions' and judgments of 'these awful actions'; both have tremendous conclusions that leave questions unanswered. Through close reading key scenes, this course will explore and attempt to untangle the dynamics of pity and horror, sympathy and judgment.
We will explore in detail Medea, Agamemnon and parts of The Libation Bearers and Eumenides: if you familiarise yourself with the plays - in any translation, including online parallel texts at http://www.perseus.tufts.edu/ - before the course, the daily time required during the course will be 2-3hrs.
